Outdoor Electrical Safety Around Water
Outdoor Electrical Safety Around Water: Keep clear of wet electrical equipment, select outdoor-rated accessories, and plan safe electrical connections for exposed locations.
Water changes the risk
Water near outlets, cords, or a service panel is an electrical hazard. Do not enter standing water to reach electrical equipment or touch wet equipment to unplug it. Move to safety and seek appropriate help. This article does not establish a date, price, or booking for a home safety workshop.
Use equipment intended for the location
Outdoor cords, receptacle covers, and connected equipment must suit the environment and intended use. Indoor accessories are not made suitable merely by covering them with a bag or tape. Read manufacturer instructions and keep connection points protected as specified. Protective devices do not eliminate the need for suitable equipment.
Plan permanent exposed installations
For patio lighting, pumps, or other outdoor equipment, provide the electrician with equipment specifications and the intended location. Moisture exposure, cable routing, and applicable protection requirements affect the installation. Avoid improvised wiring and extension-cord arrangements for permanent equipment, especially around pools and hot tubs.
